hey, you think i can apply orwell's definition of freedom to the issue of moral realativism? difficult but worth trying.
I think so. Orwell, by saying that freedom is the right to say there is an absolute, does not necessarily exclude the right to believe that there are many truths in the world.
Although I find relativism to be double plus bad. Absolutism is the way to go.
Ah 1984.... where 2 + 2 = 5.
Oh you are my hero in a medium way Jonathan. What I am actually suggesting is Orwell agues against relativism. Take a look at his dichotomy between freedom and slavery. Very interesting from a Christian point of view. I'm wondering how I can apply his ideas to the po-mo.
Hmmm... that' also a very interesting point. I like it... although if it solely depends on the 2+2=4 argument, then it weakens on the point that mathematics, though an absolute, is still a convention that humans have all agreed upon (in a major sense anyway... good luck trying to change that convention.)
Orwell says in that statement that freedom comes from the right to insist that there is an absolute and all else then follows. Hmmm.....
Newspeak writing is plusgood. No need to think about what you're reading (or writing).
